Does it have to fill my drawer?
Yes, for a couple of reasons. It does not have an outer shell, so the outer compartments rely on something else (the side of the drawer) to complete the cubby.
Also, the presence of the drawer helps keep the grid rigid. Without support like that, it will be able to rack and twist, and become more of a diamond shape. You probably don't want that to happen.
How nice is the maple? Can I get a sample?
Maple Cubby Grids use 1/4" thick solid maple that has a clear finish to protect it. At our Etsy store, we have several products that have movable dividers. Those dividers use the same material and finish.
